The Songbird Series was inspired by artist Banjie Getsinger Nicholas as a way to support and contribute to the Audubon Center in Sharon, CT. During Banjie’s 20 years as a wild bird rehabilitator she received inestimable help, knowledge and experience from the respected professionals at Sharon Audubon.

Focusing on songbirds and current concerns about their diminishing numbers due to threatened habitat, the artist proposed creating a series of 10 paintings from which she would donate 10 greeting cards of each painting to the center’s gift shop as well as an original painting or framed print to be used as a fundraiser.

Fledgling birds and bird nests are the artist’s favorite subjects for her egg tempera paintings and silverpoint drawings. The majority of wild birds that come into the hands of rehabilitators are eventually released but the artist chose to place the birds in the series in patterns suggesting domestic settings representing the brief overlap of time in which human intervention was the catalyst for returning the bird to the wild.
